Dear Expert:

I have three boys whom share one bathroom, can you imagine! We have decided this year to freshen up their space and make it more user friendly as my 12 year old son explains it.

The previous owners had chosen a navy blue which I find very dark and seems to show remnants of soap and water marks, especially near the light switch and towel rack.

Is there a colour choice better suited for this room to minimize the appearance of these boy stains?

Please help.

Dear Reader:

Boy, oh boy, oh boy! It's not a colour you want, it's the paint formulation.

Bathrooms and kitchens often take a 'wet beating'. So using any of CIL's Interior Wash & Wear collections specifically formulated for Kitchens & Bathrooms (such as Smart³, CILUX, Allure and Realife) are the best options for these wet rooms. These paints are formulated to resist moisture, mildew and household chemicals and the best part about this is you can select any colour from CIL's colour collection to primp up the room. Even your kids can give this a quick wipe down before they toss their towels in the bin!

Dear Expert:

I bought my first condo and love every tiny square foot of it.  I don't have an eye for colour and become overwhelmed with so many options. My furniture currently consists of hand me downs that do not reflect my contemporary style but I am afraid to make any furniture choices until I have a colour scheme in place. How can I choose a colour that will be best for my condo?

Dear Reader:

Congratulations on your purchase!

Firstly, it's not a condo style, it's your personal style that you want to reflect in your new home. CIL has made it oh so simple for the colour confused. CIL's colour collection has been separated into 4 mood-inspired collections: Deep & Luxurious, Clean & Playful, Mellow & Comforting and Soft & Elegant. Once you have determined how your condo should 'feel', then you are halfway there. Now the fun begins; simply select colours that collection that inspire you and make you feel good, or that coordinate with an item that does reflect your contemporary style (a favourite cushion for example). If you want a contemporary look try a new colour like CIL's Tea Dance, DL07 on one wall to create a focal wall and remaining walls painted in a supporting neutral such as Fog Grey, DL40. This is a gorgeous combination without a major commitment to such a strong red. Good Luck!

Dear Expert:

How do I choose paint when for my yellowish, dim lighting?

Dear Reader:

Dependant on the function of the space, choosing warmer colours such as reds, oranges and yellows will have a warmer glow when you have incandescent lighting. Using colours on the cooler side of the colour wheel, such as blues, greens and red-violets, although are cooler looking colours, will cast a warmer glow when used in a room with yellowish and dim lighting. Best is to select a few chips and view them in the space you want to paint in both daytime and evening to understand how the lighting will affect the colour and feel of your space.
